Mark S. DeVuyst, DDS, FICOI, FAGD

Implant Fellow | Fellow of Academy of General Dentistry

Dr. DeVuyst has practiced dentistry in Clinton Township since 2002. He’s the only dentist at Dentist4Life — and he’s chosen to keep it that way.

Why I built a practice around people who are afraid of the dentist

Since I began this practice, the patients I’ve cared for most were often the ones who almost didn’t come. When they sat down and finally told us why, it was rarely about the dentistry itself. It was about how they’d been treated somewhere else — hurried, talked over, or made to feel embarrassed for a problem they were already ashamed of.

We’ve listened to a lot of those stories. They’re why I believe fear isn’t a character flaw. It’s the result of something that happened to them, and it deserves patience — not a lecture.

So, I kept my practice small on purpose. One dentist. A team that’s been together for years. And more than ten years ago, I added oral conscious sedation — because for a lot of people, it’s the thing that finally makes care possible. Then I went a step further and set aside every Friday for those patients alone.

What I’ve learned is that most people who are terrified of the dentist stop being terrified after one good experience. That’s the part of this job I like most: watching someone who came in shaking leave with a plan and their shoulders down.
